Our Scripture reading today is Psalm 51:10, "Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right
spirit within me."
Finally after more than a year, King David get right with God regarding his sin with
Bathsheba and Uriah. He has carried this load with him long enough. What he asks
for can only come from God. “The word that begins this section is the Hebrew verb bara, which is
used in Genesis 1 for the creation of the heavens and the earth by God. Strictly used, this word describes
what only God can do: create ex nihilo, out of nothing.” (Boice) David did not have a clean heart and
only God could give him one.
The same can be said of you and me. We need God to give us a clean heart. Only by
the shed blood of Jesus Christ can a hear that is dark with sin be made clean. Next, we are in need of a
spirit that is ready to say no to temptation the next time it comes our way. “Or, a firm spirit, firm for God,
able to resist the devil, steadfast in the faith, and to abide constant in the way that is called holy.” (Trapp)
Is your heart clean and your spirit ready for the wiles of the devil? Only God can give you both.
