Our Scripture reading today is Deuteronomy 11:16, "Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not
deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them;"
God is warning the people of Israel not to be deceived and distracted by prosperity.
These people have seen God do amazing works time and time again, but God knows
the heart of man more than man does. There is a tendency to allow even the goodness
of God to turn our heart. We begin to think too highly of ourselves and not high enough
of God. If we are not careful, our worship will be turned away from God and to
ourselves or something else.
It is important that we keep ourselves close to the Word of God. This would involve
reading it, meditating on it, and obeying it. God's Word will keep us from being
turned away and worshipping other gods.
