Our Scripture reading today is 1 John 2:15-17.
Verse 15, "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world."
The "things" in this world are temporary or material.  In many cases, they are needed while in this world but they are not eternal.  My need for them should not turn into a love for them.  Someone once warned to not let our possessions possess us.  Things cannot be viewed as treasures, but can be used as tools to serve and bring honour to the Lord.
The key to this command in 1 John is to guard against loving the things we have.  Things, if put in their rightful place, can be a blessing.  When the things we have are more important than our walk with God, we are being deceived by the enemy.  Be thankful for what God has given you, but don't give things your love.  Deuteronomy 6:5, "And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might."
