Our Scripture reading today is Luke 8:35-37.

Verse 37, "Then the whole multitude of the country of the Gadarenes round about besought him to depart from them; for they were taken with great fear: and he  went up into the ship, and returned back again."

A demon possessed man has been running around the cemetery.  He meets Jesus and is delivered of the demons and now the people of the area are afraid?  I must say this is quite perplexing.  You would think they would be thrilled with the changes that were made and be welcoming Jesus to their community.  “Here was a whole city at a prayer meeting, praying against their own blessing…Horrible was their prayer; but it was heard, and Jesus departed out of their coasts.” (Spurgeon)

What we see in this event, preserved for us in the Word of God, is that not everyone is so eager to have their life changed by Jesus Christ.  Not everyone is so quick to give up the sin that seems to bring such pleasure and fulfillment.  We must be reminded of the how sin finishes every single time.  James 1:15, "Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and. sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death."  We must not let sin get a grip on our lives.  It will bring about so much pain and death.  Confess it and forsake it today!
