Our Scripture reading today is 1 Chronicles 4:10, "And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying,
Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me,
and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him
that which he requested."
We do not read much of Jabez other than this portion of Scripture. What we do read is
that he knew Who to ask for blessings. Jabez knew Who could meet his needs and
protect him. He left an example for all of God's children to follow. Books have been
written about the prayer of Jabez. “Reader, imitate the conduct of this worthy Israelite that thou mayest
be a partaker of his blessings.” (Clarke)
God is more than ready to meet our needs. God is more than ready to grant our requests. How often
do we call on Him in faith? How often do we pray fervently for some of these same things Jabez
prayed for? I would say there is a definite pattern worthy of our following.
