Our Scripture reading today is Deuteronomy 32:35, "To me belongeth vengeance, and recompence; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste."
The vengeance means punishment inflicted in retaliation for an injury or offense:
retribution. Romans 12:19, "Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto
wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord."
There are numerous times in ones life when we feel like we need vengeance. As a
child of God, we come to recognize that this not up to us. It is not in our hands to take
vengeance on someone who wrongs us. In fact, we are told in Ephesians what we are
supposed to do. Ephesians 4:32, "And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another,
even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you."
Let's make today and every day a day of forgiving and not a day of avenging.
