Our Scripture reading today is Luke 14:7-9.

Verse 8, "When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him;"

The wedding party was one of if not the most important social event in the Jewish community.  Where you were seated at the party was an indication of your status in the community.  It would have been very embarrassing to have been asked to move from a seat you chose to one of lower status.  The wise choice would always be to chose lower and then, if needed, be asked to move up.

We are presented with a lesson on the dangers of self promotion and pride.  The Bible way is always to humble ourselves and let God do any exalting in His time.  Psalm 75:6-7, "For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another."  Seek to let someone else have the best today.  God is still giving grace to the humble.
