Our Scripture reading today is Luke 13:6-9.
Verse 7, "Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground?"
The purpose of our salvation is not simply to go to Heaven when we die.  Praise God this is part of the deal!  We were saved to bring honour and glory to the LORD.  Each one of God's children ought to be bringing forth fruit.  If you have been born again by the Spirit of God, there will be fruit.  It could be, however, that you are like the tree mentioned in our text.  You have not born any fruit in quite some time.  Possibly your tree used to bring forth fruit, but it has not for several years.  What is it that has caused your life to stop bearing fruit?
I found the following reasons why fruit trees stop bearing fruit: insects; weather damage; and disease.  I am sure there are others, but these seem to have a spiritual application.
Insects:  if we allow it, the outside world will cause much damage in our lives.  It will rob us of the blessings of living for the LORD.
Weather damage:  the storms of life that are meant to refine us can cause an entire season or more of no fruit.  This is do to our continual focus on what we lost and not on God's faithfulness.
Disease:  a continual living in sin will most definitely cause a crop failure each and every time.  Many of God's servants have been sidelined by sin that was "hidden" and when it came to the surface, they were overcome by guilt and shame.
Could one of the above reasons be why you are not bearing fruit?  The good news is you can confess it to God today and start the fruit bearing process once again!!
