Our Scripture reading today is Luke 18:32-34.

Verse 33, "And they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again."

It is important that we not allow the busyness of life to distract us from what the Lord Jesus went through so we could be forgiven and have eternal life.  Not only did He die, but He endured much physical and emotional suffering leading up to the cross.  What exactly was a scourging?  "The Romans would, according to custom, scourge a condemned criminal before he was put to death.  The Roman scourge was a short whip made of two or three leather thongs or ropes connected to a handle.  The leather thongs were knotted with a number of small pieces of metal, usually zinc and iron, attached at various intervals.  Scourging would quickly remove the skin.  According to history the punishment of a slave was particularly dreadful.  The leather was knotted with bones, or heavy indented pieces of bronze."  Jesus Christ went through this so we could be called the Sons of God.  It is a miracle that He survived this tortuous treatment.

Jesus would eventually be put on the cross and die in the place of sinners like you and me.  Romans 5:8, "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."  We can living in victory today because the Son of God did not remain in the tomb...He is alive!!  Matthew 28:6, "He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay."  Our victory will always be in JESUS!  Hallelujah!
