Our Scripture reading today is 1 Samuel 18:8-9.

Verse 8, "And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?"

Saul displayed a spirit of envy and anger towards David.  His pride would not allow Saul to handle David receiving more praise than he was receiving.  We can surmise from this that Saul was more concerned with the praise of men than his relationship with the Lord.

It ought to be exciting to us to see those who are following us succeeding.  Even if they are accomplishing more than we are.  Our goal should never to be self praise or exultation but it should be the glory of God.  May we learn from Saul what not to do and instead rejoice whenever anyone succeeds in the cause of Christ.
