Our Scripture reading today is Hebrews 9:14, 22, "How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission."
The only acceptable sacrifice for sins is a blood sacrifice from a lamb without spot or
blemish. This was the way sins were atoned in the Old Testament. Once the Lord
Jesus came and became the eternal sacrifice, there was no longer a need to sacrifice a
lamb. Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God. John 1:29, "The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world."
Our salvation is dependent upon the shed blood of Jesus Christ. Another provision of
Christ's shed blood is the power we have to live the Christian life. Our service for the
LORD is empowered by the blood of the Lamb. We are saved by the blood of the Lamb
in order that we might serve the Lamb.
