Our Scripture reading today is Luke 6:41-42, "And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye."
Just like in Jesus day, there are people today who are really good at finding fault in others when they themselves have a greater fault in their own lives.  The Lord Jesus makes it clear that it is very hypocritical to live this way.  “Jesus is gentle, but he calls that man a ‘hypocrite’ who fusses about small things in others, and pays no attention to great matters at home in his own person.” (Spurgeon)
An Old Testament example of something similar to this is found in 2 Samuel 12.  The prophet Nathan tells David a story about a man who unjustly stole and killed another man’s lamb. David quickly condemned the man, but was blind to his own sin of adultery and murder, which was much greater.
Jesus did not tell us not to help our brother.  He tells us to deal with our issues before trying to help someone else with theirs.  It is a good thing to help our brother or sister with their mote as long as we deal with our beam first.
