Our Scripture reading today is Luke 3:15-17.
Verse 16, "John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:"
The mission of John the Baptist was to prepare the way and point people to the Messiah.  There were reasons why John could have been stuck on himself.  He had a miraculous birth and was a powerful preacher.  There is no doubt that John had many followers.  His example of humility is one for all of us to seek to copy.  “What was the reason, think you, of John’s always retaining his proper position? Was it not because he had a high idea of his Master, and a deep reverence for him? Ah, brethren, because of our little estimate of Christ, it is often unsafe for the Lord to trust us in any but the very lowest positions.” (Spurgeon)
We have an opportunity every day of our lives to humble ourselves and exalt the LORD Jesus.  There is nothing wrong with rejoicing in the miracle of salvation, but we must not get to the place where we think we deserved to be saved.  What we deserve and what we have in Christ are two very different destination.  God's grace brought us the gift of salvation and God's mercy kept us from the judgment of Hell.  In and of ourselves we have nothing of value to offer anyone.  This is why we should be following John's lead and directing everyone we know and meet to the Messiah, Jesus Christ.
