Our Scripture reading today is Zechariah 4:8-10.

Verse 10, "For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth."

The question from Zechariah provides its own obvious answer.  We have all despised the day of small things.  Zerubbabel had lived for 20 years in the day of small things as the temple was in ruins.  God had a plan.  Whether or not we understand it right away, a day of small things is with purpose.  God is working His purpose in and through everything.  It is a time of preparing and shaping.  As we learned recently, the Potter is shaping the clay.  His plan for our clay is always best.

We can also apply this admonition to our service for the Lord.  As the songwriter put it, "Little is much when God is in it."  I can honestly say this has been something the enemy has used in my life on numerous occasions.  When I compare my perceived "little" with the "bigness" of others, it brings about a discouragement that is not of God.  "God accepts your little works if they are done in faith in his dear Son. God will give success to your little works: God will educate you by your little works to do greater works; and your little works may call out others who shall do greater works by far than ever you shall be able to accomplish." Psalm 118:24, "This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it."
