Down Is Up

Our Scripture reading today is Luke 14:10-11.

Verse 11, "For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted."

This is one of those biblical principles that does not make sense with how the world teaches to be successful.  Self promotion is how someone makes it to the top.  Self promotion is how someone gets all the attention and awards.  Not so, according to the teaching of the Lord Jesus.  His teaching says that the quickest way up is actually down.  Those that promote themselves will eventually be humbled and those who humble themselves will eventually be exalted.  I am not so sure this promise will be fully known until eternity. 

Either way, we should follow the example of our Saviour found in Philippians 2:5-11.  Jesus humbled Himself that we might have the gift of eternal life.  He deserved the highest place but took the lowest place and was given the highest place.  Thank you, Jesus, for your willingness to stoop down and make it possible for sinners like us to have a relationship with God.
