Our Scripture reading today is Jeremiah 23:28-29.

Verse 29, "Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?"

Jeremiah is given a choice between declaring his dreams or the Word of God.  The
emphasis God places is clearly not his dreams but on what God told Jeremiah.  He clearly regarded dreams as very subjective experiences which had nothing to do with Yahweh’s word. There was a difference. Let the dreamer tell his dream if he wished, but it should be made clear that it was a dream and not a word from Yahweh.” (Thompson) This is not to say that God did not speak through dreams in the Bible.  He definitely did.  God also spoke directly to His prophets because they did not have the Word of God like we do today.

It is very important that we do not overemphasize a "dream" over the final authority of
God's Word.  The impact of God's Word over my dreams is not even comparable.  God's
Word changes lives.  God's Word burns and breaks down a hard heart.
