Our Scripture reading today is Luke 7:6-7.
Verse 7, "Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed."
We are shown quite the combination of humility and faith in the life of this centurion.  He does not feel worthy enough to have Jesus in his home and he believes that if Jesus simply says something, it will be done.  “Two features of character blend in him which do not often meet in such graceful harmony. He won the high opinion of others and yet he held a low estimation of himself.” (Spurgeon)  The centurion was also considerate of Jesus being a Jewish Rabbi.  They were not known to enter into the homes of Gentiles.  While this may have been Jewish law, it was not God's law.
The combination of humility and faith are two character traits that are greatly needed in our day.  Humility activates the grace of God that we so desperately need.  James 4:6, "But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble."  Faith is what pleases our heavenly Father.  Hebrews 11:6, "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him."  As we yield ourselves to the Spirit of God, we will see an increase in our humility and faith.  To God be all the glory!
