Our Scripture reading today is Luke 6:3-5.

Verse 5, "And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath."

There are a couple of things we can learn from this discussion with Jesus Christ and the Pharisees.  Jesus is trying to teach them to look beyond their religious upbringing.  First, the needs of people are more important than religious traditions.  The need, in this case, was for food.  What God is really looking for in our lives is love, mercy and humility.  These are far greater than any religious tradition.  What is it that motivates us in our daily walk?  Micah 6:8, "He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?"

Next, we learn from Jesus Christ words that He is over and above any "religious rules." He is claiming His deity in this exchange.  Jesus Christ is God.  This makes Him over the Sabbath or any other day.  Our aim should always be to be more like Jesus.  We should be studying His life as laid out in the Word of God.  As we learn from His example, it should be our prayer to treat people and follow God's directives the same way.

Have a wonderful day!
