Our Scripture reading today is Luke 14:12-14.
Verse 13, "But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:"
The group of people Jesus said to invite over for a meal were some of if not the most looked down people in that society.  There were no welfare programs or other government programs to provide for those who fell into these categories.  For the most part, they were left to beg or possibly depend on family for their daily provision.  There wasn't much these people could do in return for someone's hospitality.  Jesus was encouraging compassion be showed to those who were not able to return it then and now.
This act of love and compassion would at some point provide a blessing to the giver.  Acts 20:25, "...it is more blessed to give than to receive."  Jesus also points out the eternal blessing in verse 14.  We could call this act laying up treasure in Heaven.  Jesus once again places an emphasis on living our lives with an eternal view.  Our kindness toward others should be for their good and God's glory!
