Our Scripture reading today is Luke 10:7-9.

Verse 7, "And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house."

The context of this verse has to do with the disciples being supplied for because of their labours for the Lord.  This was not charity but an actual payment for their services.  We could also apply this today to the church paying the pastor and his staff.  When the church takes care of the under-shepherd, it allows him the freedom to labour in the Word and prayer.  1 Thessalonians 5:17, "Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine."  This labouring in the Word and prayer is not only for preaching purposes, but also for guiding the flock of God in every way possible.

I believe we can also apply this verse to all disciples.  In fact, every Christian should be a disciple.  Every born again believer should strive to be a faithful servant-labourer for the glory of God.  When we seek to please God and do His will, He promises us joy unspeakable and full of glory.  Just as these disciples were provided their daily needs, God will faithfully take care of His labourers.
