Today's Scripture reading is Titus 3:8-9.
Verse 9, "But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain."
The Word of God is where we ought to be investing our time and energy.  The Jewish Rabbis of this day were getting caught up in extra biblical things that in the end were not profitable.  “The Jewish Rabbis spent their time building up imaginary genealogies for the characters of the Old Testament…. It is much easier to discuss theological questions than to be kind and considerate and helpful at home, or efficient and diligent and honest at work.” (Barclay) There was more of an emphasis on the commands of men than the Word of God.
Our goal as followers of Jesus is to grow in godliness and holiness.  We must avoid spending time on issues that God did not intend for us to spend time on.  1 Corinthians 8:1, "Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth."  Our goal is to die to self every day and live a humble, Spirit-filled life.  These goals are not so men will notice us, but that men will see Jesus Christ in us.  It is not our job to draw men to ourselves, but to point as many people as possible to the Lamb of God.
