Our Scripture reading today is Luke 10:30-32.

Verses 31-32, "And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side."

The Lord Jesus continues His discussion with the lawyer by telling a story.  This parable has been referred to as the story of the Good Samaritan.  This morning, we read about the two religious elites.  These two men came upon an injured Jew and did nothing about it.  They offered no help or comfort to the battered and bleeding man.  Priest and Levite are mentioned here, partly because they were the most frequent travellers on this road, and partly to show that these were the persons who, from the nature of their office, were most obliged to perform works of mercy; and from whom a person in distress had a right to expect immediate succour and comfort; and their inhuman conduct here was a flat breach of the law.” (Clarke)

I wonder how many times we walk by someone who is in distress and needs a work of mercy?  Oh, it does not necessarily mean they will look like this beaten man must have looked.  Their needs might be internal.  We cannot visibly see their need, but God leads us to do something we just walk on by.  As we studied recently, we can all come up with excuses for not doing something.  I am sure the priest and the Levite had a list of them as well.  As we walk in the Spirit, we will do something when He prompts.  Follow His leading today!
