Our Scripture reading today is Matthew 5:44, "But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;"

This command and part of the Sermon on the Mount is in no way easy to follow.  It is actually impossible to follow if we are in the flesh.  It is not natural to love an enemy or do good to someone that hates us.  “A hard task, I must needs say, but, hard or not hard, it must be done, be it never so contrary to our foul nature and former practice.” (Trapp)

The Lord Jesus teaches us that our response  toward our enemies should not be retaliation but instead it should be love.  This response can only come as we yield ourselves daily to the Spirit of God.  He will give us what it takes to fulfill even the most impossible tasks.
