Our Scripture reading today is Luke 7:27-28.
Verse 27, "This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee."
The Lord Jesus quotes Malachi 3:1, "Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts." John the Baptist was the only prophet that it was prophesied about his coming.
- "John was steady, not shaken easily like a reed.
- John was sober, in that he lived a disciplined life, not in love with the luxuries and comforts of this world.
- John was a servant, a prophet of God.
- John was sent, as the special messenger of the Lord.
- John was special, in that he could be considered the greatest under the Old Covenant.
- John was second to even the least in the kingdom under the New Covenant."
Our text today describes John as a messenger. He was given a special task to prepare the way of the Lord. We have also been give a special task to be witnesses or messengers of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Acts 1:8, "But ye shall be witnesses..." I am forever grateful for the numerous messengers in my life. People who have lived and shared the Word of God with me time and time again. I have a responsibility to do the same for others.
May God help us to be committed messengers for His glory!
