Our Scripture reading today is Proverbs 19:11, "The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression."
The emotion of anger is something few if any can show and not be sinning.  We are challenged in this verse to defer our anger and pass over a transgression.  The wise man or man of discretion will take a pass on getting angry.  The wise man or woman recognizes how much God has forgiven them and decides to pass on that forgiveness when wronged.  “The virtue which is indicated here is more than a forgiving temper; it includes also the ability to shrug off insults and the absence of a brooding hypersensitivity.” (McKane, cited in Ross)
Other Scriptures admonish us in the same way.  Proverbs 14:29, "He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly."  Proverbs 16:32, "He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city."
I also like what Matthew Henry wrote about our text: "Not to be over-hasty in his resentments: Discretion teaches us to defer our anger, to defer the admission of it till we have thoroughly considered all the merits of the provocation, seen them in a true light and weighed them in a just balance; and then to defer the prosecution of it till there be no danger of running into any indecencies. Give it time, and it will cool."
Walk in the Spirit today and He will guide you to defer anger and pass over the wrong.
