Our Scripture reading today is Luke 6:46, "And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
There is a distinction made by the Lord Jesus of those who merely make a profession of faith, but do not possess the Spirit of God.  There are those who verbally claim to be a Christian, but their works do not back up what they claim.  James 2:18, "Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works."  Church is simply a religious duty that is checked off of a list for the week.  “There are those that speak like angels, live like devils; that have Jacob’s smooth tongue, but Esau’s rough hands.” (Trapp)
My claim to the name Christ should be proven in the way I live my life.  There should be a level of commitment to the Lord that exceeds any other commitments in my life.  I am not living a certain way to obtain favour with God, but I am living a certain because I already have favour with God through His Son.  It should be my daily desire to walk in the will of God for that day.  My prayer should be for His Spirit to enable me to be obedient to every way He leads me.
