Our Scripture reading today is Joshua 7:10-12.
Verse 12, "Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you."
God had given the victory in Jericho.  The people were given specific instructions from Joshua regarding what they were to do following the walls coming down.  Achan decided to follow his fleshly desires and this sin caused 36 men to lose their lives.  There was sin in the camp when they went to Ai.  This means they went to battle without the help of their God.
Our battles are different today, but we still have daily battles.  We need God's mighty hand as we face our evil enemy.  He is seeking to completely destroy us.  The Bible word is, "devour."  It means to swallow up and destroy.  In our flesh, we are no match for the power of the devil.  We must have God's victorious power leading us to victory.  In order to have his power, our lives need to be purged of sin.  2 Timothy 2:21, "If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work."
