Our Scripture reading today is Luke 24:21-23.

Verse 21, "But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done."

It would seem to me that these men were looking more for a military leader who would deliver the Jews from any and all of their enemies.  Possibly someone who would finally stand up to the Romans and free Israel from their bondage.  Since Jesus was dead, He did not live up to their expectations.  They trusted Jesus but in the wrong way.

Jesus had already proclaimed His purpose for coming in Luke 19:10.  He came to seek and to save lost sinners.  He came to be the sacrificial lamb for the sins of the whole world.  Romans 5:6, "For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly."  He did not come to conquer Rome.  He came to conquer sin, hell, death and the grave!!  Praise the Lord!!
