Our Scripture reading today is Luke 9:7-9.

Verse 9
"And Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him."

The motive Herod had for seeing Jesus is not clear in verse nine, but from other passages of Scripture, we can conclude that he was not a sincere seeker.  Herod did not want to see Jesus to hear more preaching and teaching.  It could be the he wanted to see a miracle or even to kill Jesus. (See Luke 13:31-32)  Pilate would send Jesus to meet with Herod on the morning of His crucifixion and Herod still wanted to see a miracle.

Could it be that we have a little bit of Herod in us from time to time?  We are seeking Jesus, but only because we need something.  Our motive for following Jesus is to see a miracle or because we are in tight spot financially and we need Him to provide.  It is not wrong to ask for our needs to be met, but if that is the only time God hears from us, there is a problem.  If our only communication with Him is give me...give me...give me, we really need to change.  Our first and foremost motivation for communicating with God should be a growing love for Him.
