Our Scripture reading today is Proverbs 16:33, The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the LORD."
When a lot was cast it would be similar to someone rolling the dice. It was a way to make a decision by chance. Numbers 26:55, "Notwithstanding the land shall be divided by lot: according to the names of the tribes of their fathers they shall inherit. Acts 1:26, "And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles." By casting a lot, they were saying that whatever came about was the will of God. Each of these situations as well as our lives today are better off under the control of our Sovereign heavenly Father.
The sooner we commit our daily decisions to Him, the sooner we can claim the promise of Proverbs 3:5-6, "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." God will do a much better job leading our lives than we will. His will we must do!
